Perfect Book Picks for Preschoolers

Before we became parents, the not so crafty momma was a not so crafty preschool educator! We have previously posted our picks for must have books for newborns and terrific books for toddlers. Tonight, we want to share some books that we feel are perfect for preschool aged children. Because we know most parents are on a budget, all the books on our list are under $12.

The Wonky Donkey became a home library essential when
the video of the grandmother laughing hysterically while reading the book surfaced online. It is a silly story that will make everyone giggle.

The Wonderful Things You Will Be is beautifully written and illustrated. The story is simple and very sweet.

Dragons Love Tacos does not contain any deep life lessons or fancy story line, but it will make most preschoolers (and their parents) giggle. It is a silly, but adorable, story that is really well illustrated.

On the Night You Were Born hold’s a special place in our hearts. We bought it for our toddler while she was still in the NICU as an infant. It is also a great story for preschoolers though! Preschoolers are often very curious about the parts of their lives that they do not remember, so this book is the perfect way to help open up conversation on that topic.

We hope you enjoyed our book list! We would love to hear from you! What is your favorite book to read to a preschool aged child?

  1. My boys are older now, but I love these book options!! What do you think would be some great books for 3rd graders and 6th graders? – Nikki

    1. On this list, Dragons Love Tacos would also keep a 3rd graders interest. I also love The Boxcar Children books and the Magic Treehouse books for this age group! I am a little out of my element when it comes to 6th graders, but I hear great things about Dairy of a Wimpy Kid and Percy Jackson series.

  2. I personally do not have children however I have a lot of friends that do and their kids fall with in this age group. I think these would make great gifts for them, I think the gift of a book is one of the best gifts! I might even read them myself! 🙂

  3. I love The Wonkey Donkey! Such a fun and great read. Tacos have been requested alot recently by the kiddos, so I may just have to grab Dragons Love Tacos 😂

  4. My sister just brought Wonky Donkey for my boys when she came to visit this weekend and they love it! We also have On The Night You Were Born but haven’t read that in a while. I need to get Dragons Love Tacos for my oldest, lately he has been obsessed with tacos!

  5. I need to get the Wonky Donkey! I remember that video and the name completely escaped me the last time I was buying books for the boys.

  6. Aww, the last book is the only one we’ve read, but it’s a good one!!! My girls esp loved (and still love) the Sheep books (Sheep in a Jeep etc), the Mouse/Moose/etc books (If you give a Moose a Muffin, Merry Christmas Mouse, etc. – I think all by Kevin Heinkes), and the Doreen Cronin/Betsy ??? books about the barnyard animals (Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type and the others in that series).

  7. These are some great recommendations! we used to love Dr Seuss! It’s so important to get into a routine and read to your toddler before they get to school! what a great post!
